Preventing Colds and Flu in the Workplace

With the colder weather upon us and only beginning the Winter season, the spread of Colds and Flu throughout the workplace is at it's annual peak. At these times it is imporant to take precautions to prevent the spread of sickness throughout the workplace -  which can affect working health and morale, as well as cost your business time and money.

The Flu Vaccine is highly effective for preventing the flu, however it is not 100% effective and therefore extra precautions must be taken by those who are infected as well as those who are trying to avoid getting sick.

To reduce the risk of spreading of getting infected with Cold and Flu viruses at work, it is important to practice these preventative strategies:

  • Call in sick when necessary
  • Cover your mouth when you sneeze or cough
  • Wash your hands often
  • Don't touch your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Wipe down common areas with disinfectant
  • Avoid close contact with infected persons
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Get lots of fresh air
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a healthy, balanced diet
  • Don't smoke and avoid alcohol consumption
  • Avoid stress - stress can decrease the function of the immune system

By following these preventative measures, you will be able to reduce your chances of becoming infected with the Cold or Flu virus.

However, it should be noted that these are only preventative strategies - if you suffer persisting or serious symptoms, or have further questions, seek medical advice from your medical practitioner or your site health representative.
